"Pure Innocence", silk painting.

Silk, dyes.
I wanted to try it for a while, but never did...
Last month I got bitten by creativity and finally purchased
modest set of American-made silk dyes and some fabric
to test it on... Plus of course some chemicals...
This is my #1 try out on silk painting.
Model for the "Innocence" was our Fox Terrier "Sasha",
who being a Fox Terrier is anything, but "innocent".
I enjoyed my painting session, no pressure of any sort,
just do it and let see what happens...
I still need to "fix" those dyes, so piece will be washable.
Didn't get a chance to do that yet.
Hopefully that will work out well....
Mean while I'm thinking of starting next piece.

This painting/drawing was very time consuming and will be not for sale.

I started this work from careful drawing with using of ingenious grid method
introduced to me by my friend, very talented watercolor artists Larry Lombardo.
This is none-traditional grid what somewhat speeding things up with initial drawing.
I'm starting my drawing of general outlines with graphite pencil
and then finishing it with pastel pencil. All grid lines have to go.
When it comes to all those small pretty flowers, there is no way
and need to copy those with using of grid. I just had those drawn free-hand.
After m,y drawing was finished in pastel pencil,
I did alcohol wash over it, to make things more soft.
It also embeds pigment to the paper.
Next step - pastel pencils. I work in my very favorite brand Caran D'Ache.
Those are really amazing pencils, what I truly love and enjoy.
When I finished working with pencils, I did some dry-brush blending
where needed and finished this work with few touches of soft pastels.
Voila!
Here they are - my beautiful schnauzer girls - Gigi (on the left)
and Lusha (on the right).
This is my first work in new for 2014/2015 schnauzer series.

Pet Portrait in pastel.

This is an Abby, she is a Norwich Terrier girl. My dear friend Christina, Abby's owner,
asked me last to pint her a picture of her "baby". I decided it will be a good reason
to try out my new pastel pencils and my Canson paper what I was hording in my art attic.
This is very popular paper for pastels ac charcoal, but I normally ignore it,
because of my love to play with all sorts of underpainting.
However for Abby it was a good choice - simple, yet - delicate.
I'm pleased with result and it was nice to take "vacation" away from my Oils.
Most impotently - my friend is very pleased with this portrait too.

One of my first Pet Portraits in Oil Pastel and how it was done.
I like to work with my photographs and after all turn some of the best ones into paintings... Since I only have as much time and so many things to do (try to plane you day around 20+ dogs, two horses, party-time job, all hobbies and yes, family!), I'm using a lot of digital images as reference for my art works. There are several ways to go about it and I will share with you some of them, when I have some extra pictures of work in progress... This one was my second attempt to do a pet portrait in Oil Pastel. I used Sennelier Plain Air set and Sennelier watercolor paper. Reference image was one of the shots our Wire Fox Terrier, Zippy, heaving good time with his toy.
First I cropped the photo to the exact create exact prototype of my future painting.
I used a Photoshop to put grid on his photo and separate it on smaller parts, what will make reference easier to handle. I did hand drown sketch from reference picture
and then rendered it in Sennelier's starting from background, then putting a layer of white pastel on image of dog, as a base color and then adding extra colors (browns, grays etc). I used a small piece of my eraser as blender to mix up layers and create a coat structure.
This particular work was done in size about 8 X 10 and finished at one evening... (OK, let be honest - way after midnight!)
