3 days of watercolor with Larry.

Last 3 days I spent in Mechanicsburg Art Center playing with watercolors.
This was a second time when I got to study with one of my all-time
favorite watercolor artists/teachers - Larry Lombardo.
Last time we saw each other about 3 years ago. It was great to see him again
refresh old stuff and learn a few new things what he recently came up with
(Larry did change his pallet and color mixing system somewhat,
compare to what I knew from before).
We had wonderful time and ended up with beautiful little paintings of this lovely young lady.
Larry will be teaching another class in January 2014.
Everybody who is interested hurry up to jump in!
As for me... I may conceder painting something in watercolor over this winter,
just need to get those new Larry's secret colors and I'll be good to go!

"Last Light", pastel.

"Last Light", 8 x 10" on Wallis Belgium Mist.

One more of my small studies on gray Wallis paper.
I did this subject a while ago on different support
and now wanted to give some new 'twist" to it.
Working on darker surface has tendency to affect choice of colors
and make painting more strong and moody (at my case anyway),
what this one clearly is compare to early version
I did two years ago on white paper.
I really enjoyed working on all those blades of grass
and nuances of purple threading this painting together...
Hope You like it too!

I did previous year for the client.

Two shows, two Coasts, two receptions - One date! Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art & Randy Higbee's Gallery 6 x 6" juried exhibitions.

Yesterday I got my acceptance letter from Randy Hibgee's Gallery
what confirmed that all my 3 entries were accepted into their
annual juried 6 X 6" Exhibition and sale.
The same very day I received my frames, took some time
to do the framing and packing and today all 3 pastels
went of their way across of whole country to be a part
of this amazing show. Too bad I can not be there,
but on a good note" show reception in CA will be
the same very day, as one in Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art,
what I hope not to miss.
Wish to see some of You in new Hope during artists reception
and award ceremony...

"Golden Harvest", pastel on Wallis.

"Golden harvest", 6 x 9", Pastel

My latest pastel painting on mounted Wallis paper. This is another version of the same scene
what I painted earlier this year on location, during our two-weeks long trip to Washington State.

I did fairly simple value sketch and then repeated it on my paper with graphite pencil.

Simple watercolor underpainting was to create mood and give me idea about
my main colors.

After underpainting dried I covered my work with glassin and it was ready
to be transported to the gallery for finishing with pastels.
I taped my reference photo AND original value sketch to the same board.
One was suppose to be a reminder of values,
while the other one - for my color reference.

I got a wonderful weather and went with my painting outside,
regardless of fact - this time I was working from photo.

"Reflections in Pastel" National Juried Art Exhibition 2013.

"Bluffs and Trees"
12 x 12", Pastel on Pastelbord.

Just got my e-mail notification from Arkansas Pastel Society,
stating that "Bluffs.." were chosen by Jury
for "Reflections in Pastel" National Juried Art Exhibition.
Only 45 art works were selected.
This makes it my third National for pastels-only exhibition in 2013.
I'm very happy and look like will have to ship plenty of art pieces later
this month. Still waiting for few more show-responses...

"Mail Stop", Pastel.

"Mail Stop", 8x 10" on Pastelbord.

Just one more time revisited one of my favorite spots few miles from home.
Love that peaceful valley. That is my personal retreat from modern society...
My two horses live there.
This is my very first painting finished in my brand-new studio!..

For limited time this piece is also offered for bid on DPW auction.

"California Cypress", oil.

"California Cypress", Oil
8 x 8" on cradled 3/4" deep panel.

I was painting and experimenting a lot lately... This is another
small work in Oils on cradled panel. Partially brushwork, partially
palette knife. Memory of my trip to Carmel last September.
I started work on those panels because they do not require framing
and could be displayed on the wall as-is with some extra-painting job done on its sides.

Currently this painting is offered at DPW auction.

McKee's Half-falls revisited.

Today's Plein Air session at one of my favorite local spots - McKee's Half-Falls.

I desided to work on mounted Wallis paper, because I wanted to use
wet technique for my underpainting.

I had two perfect hours of painting time, while Irina had some reading time
and also took several pictures of me painting and chipmunks playing.

This étude is available now at DPW auction.

Hope to get out next week for another session.

"Granny's Cup", Pastel. Finished.

"Granny's Cup", 8 x 10"
Pastel on La Carte.

Beautiful day today here in PA. I finished this little painting and went
to spend some time with two my horses. My friend's farm is a dream-land.
Some of my very best memories comes from there... Just happy.
Going to put away this little pastel now and see what else can I do...

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

"Granny's cup", pastel in progress.

Another small Still Life project on La Carte. 8 x 10",
Holbein and Girault pastels, mixed pastel pencils.

"Two for You", oil on Gessobord.

"Two for You"
8x8" on Cradled Gessobord.

This one of my "Contemporary" floral paintings done by wet-on-wet method.
Two beautiful lilies joined together in the shiny red vase.  Reference picture for this
photo belongs to "Paint and Draw Together" blog, what I adore... but never can
organize myself to have something ready to submit
in timely manner while they have their challenges open.
This painting is lighter then represented on this photo and has more nuances to it.
Available at Daily Paintworks.
Please check my gallery there, if interested.

"Radiance", oil, finished.

"Radiance", Oil,
11 x 14" on panel.

Finally I had time to get back to this piece and finish it. It is all bight and shiny and so had to dry before I can get any good picture of it. Still... it is finished. And I'm not sure what I'll be up to next.. I have two nice 8x8" cradled Gessobords... Maybe I need to thing what I can do with those...

"Subalpine Meadows", Pastel.

"Subalipine Meadows"
10x8", Pastel on mounted paper
Wallis Belgium Mist

Finished rendering of my latest pastel study.
I have to admit: it IS different, working on toned paper, but
it was interesting process. I especially enjoyed
working on those pine trees in the left.
This also was a test for my new studio pastel-box...
I really need to get used to that one, it is totally new "toy"
and I didn't learn enough about it yet. Need to paint more, I guess.

Mount Rainier meadows, pastel in progress.

Just started another small pastel painting after our summer trip to Washington State.
This work will be done on mounted Belgium Mist Wallis paper
what is naturally toned to warm-gray color. So far I'm done with my pencil sketch
and watercolor underpainting. It is ready for pastel, but so far it is anything, BUT
pastel. It is going to be exiting little painting. can not wait to get back to it tonight!

Thursday, September 12, 2013

"Way of Lilies", 6x6", Pastel.

"Way of Lilies"
Another small 6x6" painting on Wallis paper.
minimized version of "Waterway with Lilies" what I painted before.
Fun little painting, looks bigger on photo then it is actually is.
