Trust me, I was surprised just as much, when I found out about this method. But it works, and sometimes gives you a LOT of advantage. Most of the time it is very safe to use a color of your paper as middle value and use black charcoal for darkest darks and white for lightest places. With this painting I used more mid-tones then I usually would, but looks to me it is working for me.
