"Temptations and Innocence" in Soft Pastel and Oil Pastel.

I finished my PastelMat roses and gave it a name what fits it to perfection in my understanding...
I call it "Temptations and Innocence"- combination of light and dark roses.
Now I'm back to "Innocence" part  and starting another painting from the same reference and this time in Oil pastel. Oil pastel version will be bigger and will NOT have red roses as part of composition. It also will be slightly bigger - 16 x 16". I'm using Ampersand Encausticbord for this work and will attempt to do
no-glasing conservation option . Pretty existing new project!

"Morning Fog." Pastel

Morning Fog.
10x 8"   Pastel on RTX board

This was a pretty quick for me painting. more like pre-thinking for another painting I may do one day.
This is a very top of our drive-way with the fog bank coming down from the mountains. When it comes, you never can see those mountains, you can not even see the forest, just some closest bushes and this very tree on the right. I love it. Perhaps one day I'll be happy with how I painted it.
Today's painting is only a play. But I touched the mystery of this fog and sometime will be back to it.

Roses on PastelMat. Pastel WIP.

Roses on PastelMat.
11 x 11"   Pastel

Today  I git lucky with time and went back to my painting. I did no blending this time, therefore it is looking sort of funny. But I don't care. I'm pretty happy with over-all appearance and will work on details later. Good to see some progress after few days of NOTHING! Yes, I'm busy with those online art classes Johannes is giving and love each and every of them.
But it is very time consuming, of course.

This is not going to be easy and/or fast. No questions about it. It is not really big painting, so I have to be extra careful to do it right. But fortunately I feel - I do have right colors and this painting does go the way I want it to go. Dark roses are part of the darkness and light roses are part of the light. This is an idea. Tomorrow is another day and hopefully I'll ave more time to work on this my painting.

This will be my new project, what perhaps will take some time to accomplish. Have to do it slow and very carefully, especially because of combination of  very dark background with very light colored flowers. My reference is a carefully created digital photo what looks nothing like its original  (and I'm thankful for it too! Original was nothing to die for.) I'm stating from negative space on this one, because it is the only way to keep light roses clean of dark pastel dust. So far so good. Girault and Holbein Pastels, CarbOthello and Gioconda pastel pencils.

"Hibiscus" Oil Pastel by Tatiana Myers.

"Hibiscus" by Tatiana Myers
5 x 7"  Pencils and Oil Pastel on Encausticbord.

This work is an actual Oil pastel, but before I painted it with pastels I did heavy layer of underpainting with watercolor pencils and washed it with water. Therefore this is double-layer painting, even all you see is mostly an Oil Pastel.
This work is accomplished on brand new for our market support by Ampersand called Encausticbord and I'm putting that one on list of my very favorites. Lovely board to work on. Takes pencils, water-media (watercolor, gouache, tempera), somewhat suitable for soft pastels (but  Pastelboard is still better for those) Oil pastels and of course Encaustics. very interesting, very promising board. I already love it.

Just one more update on my tempera work. I didn't do much yesterday, but day before I did. mostly - lighter highlights on flower petals and some other small things here and there...

"Royal Purple"Egg Tempera WIP. Update #2

"Royal Purple" by Tatiana Myers

14 x 11".  Egg Tempera and ink on Aquabord.

It is just not so purple I though it will be... No right pigment, I guess?... However now I don't have any white spaces with board showing any more... what is a BIG progress. Needfully to mention, I never had tempera of this size done before and it is complicated (for me, I know some gurus will consider this size as "complicated") and somewhat slow... Of course I was busy with other things last few day and didn't paint too much. And today I more likely will be working on side show for DPP blog, but hopefully I will have some extra time to work on this one too...

"Royal Purple" Egg Tempera WIP. Update #1.

"Royal Purple" by Tatiana Myers
14 x 11".  Egg Tempera and ink on Aquabord.

Some more progress on my Clematis tempera painting. One word - slow. But with every new layer I'm starting to like it better, so... we have some hope here, it can turn into something nice after all. As for now... I'm pretty much trying this and that and studying all the possible errors and discoveries.

Fine Art of Tatiana Myers. Today I found out that my Oil pastel "Iris garden" was accepted in 40th Annual Open Regional Juried Exhibit of York Art Association. Opening reception will be this upcoming Sunday. It is too bad, I can not be there this time, because of other obligations. Otherwise I'm very happy. "Iris Garden" is one of my personal favorites.

OK, OK! Not "today". I know about for a while, I'm just behind of myself with my blogging. Too many things to do.  I couldn't make it to opening reception this time because we were busy with our schnauzer on a dog show. Choices, choices!... Just can not do it all!

More Irises... Oil Pastel WIP update.

"Irises" Oil Pastel 20 x 16", Pastelbord.

I returned to painting of my irises what I couldn't go back to... for some while. Most of other things are done, show entries all sent out, nothing really has to be "thee must", no deadlines... Good feeling for once.
Therefore this is a first work I have full intentions to finish and it will go on the wall of my studio at Gallerie 13.

"View of Kings Gap" Plein Air pastel landscape.

"View of Kings Gap" Plein Air
  9 x 12 ", La Carte,  Pastels.

Tonight I finalized my Plein Air  painting what I did this Sunday during our paint out at Kings Gap State park. Almost all of us painted pretty much  the same thing. View of Kings Gap vista was so magnificent that it was hard not to try what could you do about it.

Like usually I went in too many details and didn't finish bottom part of my painting, what is very  typical for me. Most of the time I'm starting to work from the top down, just to prevent all that pastel mess. Usually this strategy  works just fine, but sometimes I'm ending up with half-finished painting when top part is looking totally finished and bottom part is barely there... Not hard to fix it later on, what I did. the only problem is - I don't have a frame or mat for this size of painting, so I have to wrap it in glassine and put it on a shelf till better times.

Today our group of Plein Air artists (OK,  OK!... It is called: "Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters") had our first group show at Kings Gap State park mansion. Show was a part of garden Harvest festival  what attracted a lot of people. Great food, pony rides, live music, beautiful views and of course few of us painting!... Great way to spend Sunday afternoon, but it was sort of cold...  Fall is definitely here!

Studio opening and DPP show at Gallerie 13.

Yesterday, Friday October 1 we had a great night at Gallerie 13, Mechanicsburg, PA.
Gallery had two featured artists, PLUS our Daily Painter of Pennsylvania group  show moved from State  Capitol Rotunda to Gallerie 13. Linda Young and myself had our studio doors open for public for the first time. My room what we are shearing with my good friend and great Equine photographer Karen Pottiger (Cove Creek Photography) wasn't totally finished, but we are working on it and it will only get better. We had incredible turn out. So many people, by the end of night my head was spinning from all the questions and new faces. Several paintings were sold this night not counting numerous prints and cards. But most importunely - everybody had a very good time.

2nd Floor Gallery in Mechanicsburg offers visual arts in unique light | PennLive.com

2nd Floor Gallery in Mechanicsburg offers visual arts in unique light | PennLive.com

Published: Thursday, August 26, 2010, 3:41 AM

Ellen Hughes

Despite its work-a-day name, Mechanicsburg has considerable charm and whimsy of its own, characterized by the 2nd Floor Gallery. I visited it, not for the first time, last week. The space is a perfect example of the benefits to be gained in the conversion and repurposing of an old building. It also gives artists the opportunity to display and sell their work to clients without having to be directly involved in that transactional process.

Until nine years ago, 2nd Floor Gallery was a working Presbyterian church in the heart of Mechanicsburg. The church moved to a new space, and now the site is devoted to the visual arts. It has more than 500 works regularly rotated from a much larger stash, representing almost every kind and every level of art.

Each month there’s a featured artist, and this month it’s Linda Buckwalter, whose day job is teaching math at the Harrisburg Area Community College. Her wholesome landscapes, florals and animals greet you when you open the door to the main gallery. That’s after you climb the creaky stairs and admire the old brickwork peeking through the plastered staircase wall.

What might distract you when you open that door to the gallery is the space itself, with its high ceiling, ecclesiastical light fixtures, sloping wooden floor and stained glass windows covered in translucent plastic because, according to Terry Kennedy, the executive director of 2nd Floor Gallery, they leak. Nevertheless, the windows let in a massive amount of natural light, aided by copious track lighting. You’re dazzled by light and color.

At the far end of the gallery, you can see the pipes of the organ; the organ is gone, but the pipes decoratively remain. On the wall, flanking what must have been the pulpit, is the vestigial worship service schedule, slotted into a little wooden display case. With the huge windows and whatever else remains from its previous incarnation, there is little room for wall display, but that problem has been solved creatively.

The space is divided by freestanding solid surfaces, diagonally sectioning off the huge room in a way that its pews must have done when it was a functioning church. There’s a stable of about 100 artists whose works are regularly exhibited, and because the displays are organized by artist whenever possible, each small area acts as a mini-exhibition of that artist.

If you’ve ever been to Montmartre, that legendary outdoor art mecca that overlooks Paris, there’s that same feeling of infinite variety; acrylics, oils, watercolors, mobiles, note cards, sculpture and jewelry; portraits, abstracts, pop and op art plus Pennsylvania landscapes and plenty of pictures of pets. Of course, everything is for sale, and most of the artists have a local connection, including from the famed group known as the Seven Lively Artists.

The 2nd Floor Gallery also has a first floor. The former church administrative offices are now small galleries for individual artists, and there are even a couple of artists’ studios, plus another small exhibition space, this month devoted to the oil pastels and egg temperas of artist Tatiana Myers. As does Buckwalter, she devotes herself to canvases of flowers, water landscapes and still life studies.

Kennedy spends much of his time keeping what’s on permanent display moving around; within a three-month span, there’s likely to be a complete rotation, so what you see when you visit the gallery is likely to be different each time.

“There are some great art communities in major towns, like Lancaster and Harrisburg, but there is a surprising number of talented artists in Mechanicsburg,” said Kennedy, a working artist in his own right, who currently has an exhibit in New York. “We really pride ourselves on educating the public that artists are not pretentious, obnoxious or crazy,” he said.

You can see for yourself if that’s true at the monthly receptions held every third Saturday, when artists and the public have a chance to mingle. Performance art and demonstrations also take place, plus live music.

It’s a “close-knit group of artists that band together to promote the gallery to friends and clients,” Terry Kennedy summarized.

Although the building is extraordinary, Kennedy said, “It’s really the artists” that make 2nd Floor Gallery a worthwhile destination.

More Irises... Oil Pastels WIP.

Yes, this is right - more irises!
I'm using the same ref. photo I used before for soft pastel painting I did earlier this month ( I think it was thins month anyway, but perhaps it might be August).
This will be one of bigger works 20 x 16". I'm not using any underpainting for this one, just drawing and filling with color. Also I'm trying to utilize some of my harder Oil pastels Craypass Specialist. I love their colors, but didn't like it much when I tried them on paper... However they do fine on pastelbord. What is a good thing and will safe for me some of my Holbeins.
I should be working on some miniatures instead, but... It just ain't working for me. Wrong time maybe?...

My paintings went to Bucks County!

This Monday we hand-delivered group of my 7 paintings to
Works looks wonderful on a wall at Gallery's main lobby of gallery.
I'm very pleased and may only hope that people will like it too. Oil Pastels are relatively new medium, but have a lot of potential and... at my opinion they are totally perfect for floral artworks.
